Ray Farningham has taken over as interim manager of Montrose after player-boss Steven Tweed stood down citing work and family commitments. The 38-year-old Tweed joined Montrose in January 2009 from East Fife and they presently lie eighth of the 10 teams in Scotland's Third Division.

But he was recently appointed to a managerial position with the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Farningham takes charge for Tuesday's visit by East Stirlingshire.

The 49-year-old Farningham previously managed Forfar Athletic, helping them retain their place in Division Two before leaving to become big-spending Gretna's chief scout in May 2006.

During his period as manager, whilst the league position during his tenure has been disappointing, the club enjoyed two excellent Scottish Cup runs

Farningham was made redundant when Gretna went into liquidation in 2008 but quickly returned to coaching when he became Jocky Scott's assistant at Dundee until the manager was sacked in March 2010, after which he became Tweed's assistant.

He will be assisted at Station Park by goalkeeping coach Stuart Garden but will also have to do without the experienced presence in defence of a player-manager who began his career with Hibernian before spells at Ionikos, Stoke City, Dundee, Duisburg, Yokohama and Livingston.

Derek Sim told the Montrose website: "As chairman, I have enjoyed an excellent working relationship with Steven and it is to his great credit he has managed a considerably reduced player budget whilst also bringing to the club a strong coaching and fitness regime.

"As part of his business commitments, he will be spending periods of time away from home and therefore at times unable to be available for midweek training.

"With a young family, Steven wishes to spend more time with his wife and sons, believing it the right time to stand down and allowing the club a sufficient period to appoint a new manager prior to the end of the season.

"During his period as manager, whilst the league position during his tenure has been disappointing, the club enjoyed two excellent Scottish Cup runs which brought much needed revenue to the club."
