The opening chance of the match fell to Montrose after Kevin Webster's cross somehow found its way to top scorer Craig Smart, but with the goal at this mercy he amazingly shot well over when it was easier to score.

It was Montrose who once more threatened the Elgin goal. A quick free-kick found Kerr Dodds on the left-hand side and his effort just crept by the far post to the relief of keeper Kieron Renton.

Elgin finally created an opening after 20 minutes when a corner played to the front post found Stephen Black, but he failed to test James Butter and shot into the side-netting

The deadlock was broken after half an hour and deservedly went to the away side. Webster's free-kick from the right was not cleared and fell to Steven Kerrigan, whose overhead kick found the net from 13 yards.

Almost immediately Elgin hit back to level with their first shot on target. Adam Nelson's corner from the left found William Martin at the back-post, and his effort was turned in by Hugh Dixon for his fourth goal of the season.

Kerrigan then found himself in yards of space and drilled a low effort from 30 yards which saw Renton scrambling down low to his right to save well.

Montrose found themselves back in front within 10 minutes of the second half. Top scorer Smart cut in from the left and from 25 yards struck the ball past Renton.

Elgin almost grabbed an equalised when a James McKenzie free-kick was met by Pat Vigurs, but his header went on to the roof of the net.

Elgin finally levelled with just under 10 minutes left when, after piling bodies into the Montrose box, Martin prodded home from three yards to become City's leading scorer.
