Montrose and Berwick battled their way for a share of the spoils in a gritty encounter.

Berwick had most of the early chances, and after 10 ten minutes a free-kick from Mark McGarty was well saved by keeper Sandy Wood.

After 20 minutes great skill by Montrose's James Russell played in Barry Donnachie, whose first shot was blocked by a defender and follow-up effort saved by Gary O'Connor.

In the 29th minute a well-struck drive by Berwick's Daniel Swanson forced another fine save from Wood.

After 39th minutes fine play by Montrose's Martyn Fotheringham gave Calum Watson a shooting opportunity, and his drive was saved O'Connor.

Five minutes from half-time a header from Berwick's Kevin Haynes was saved by Wood.

Montrose were out of luck in the 55th minute when fine skill by Fotheringham saw his chip from 20 yards rebound off the Berwick cross bar.

Berwick threatened again after 60 minutes when a drive from Kevin McLeish forced another great save from Wood.

Berwick had the ball in the net in the 67th minute, but Swanson's effort was ruled offside.

Berwick continued to press for what would been an important victory, and Wood made another good save from Swanson.

Six minutes from time Wood made his one mistake of the game when he dropped a high ball, but he recovered well to save before Berwick could take advantage.

Montrose's last chance came in the final minute when a Paul Doyle free-kick cleared the cross bar.
