Stenhousemuir marched on at the top of the third division with an emphatic victory over Montrose.

Montrose went close to scoring after nine minutes when a cross from James Russell broke off defender Robbie Henderson and struck the top of the bar on its way over.

Stenhousemuir settled and took the lead in the 16th minute. Andy Gibson played the ball through and Iain Diack drove home from the edge of the box.

Montrose tried to hit back and Gary Middleton headed inches wide from a corner. Stenhousemuir went close in the 26th minute when Diack laid the ball off to Colin Cramb, whose shot was well saved by Sandy Wood.

In the 33rd minute another effort from Cramb was saved by Wood. Then the big striker headed over from a free-kick. In the closing minutes of the half, Wood made further saves from Diack and Paul Murphy.

Stenhousemuir continued to dominate in the second half, and Tommy Sinclair shot wide from the edge of the box after 60 minutes.

A minute later Diack turned well and shot just wide of the target. David Templeton went through for Stenhousemuir and immediately had the ball in the net only to be given offside. Then on two further occasions he was denied by Wood.

After 76 minutes Templeton got the ball past Wood only for Paul Doyle to clear off the line.

Stenhousemuir wrapped things up five minutes from time when a shot from Tommy Sinclair was handled by Russell and John-Paul McBride scored from the spot.
