Craig Smart struck a hat-trick to inspire Montrose to a deserved 3-1 victory over a disappointing Cowdenbeath side.

Smart netted the opener from the penalty spot midway through the first half after Stevie Kerrigan was brought down inside the box by Gary Fusco.

Ian Mauchlen got the Blue Brazil back on level terms eight minutes later, netting from close range after Darren Gribben's effort came back off the crossbar.

Montrose's lead was restored by Smart on the hour mark when he headed home from Euan Hall's left wing cross.

Smart completed his hat trick after 74 minutes, firing home from Graham Sharp's cross to wrap up the win.

The results lifts Montrose into fifth place nine points behind leaders Peterhead, while Cowdenbeath remain rooted in second from bottom.
